Private investigator shares theory in Shelley Mook case

SHELBYVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A private investigator has a new theory in the case of a missing school teacher who vanished three years ago.
After years of searching, investigators with the TBI presume Shelley Mook was murdered.
The Bedford County teacher disappeared on Feb. 28, 2011. Investigators found her burnt-out car a few days later in Rutherford County, but they never found Mook.
Kevin Keele, an investigator with a private law firm, said whoever is responsible did not act alone.
"There absolutely would have had to have been help in disposing of her vehicle," Keele said.
Keele said whoever disposed of Mook's car would have had to have a separate ride back.
"That would be probably like 20 to 25 miles," Keele said. "Just absolutely too far for one person to drive there, dispose of the car and walk back in the middle of the night."
Keele said he has been thinking about this theory for some time, but this is the first time he has shared it.
"It's something we've thought all along that there had to be at least two people involved, at least," he said.
Early in the investigation, the TBI named Shelley Mook's estranged husband, Tyler Mook, as their main person of interest. He was never arrested.
Recently, police in Florida said Tyler Mook attacked his girlfriend. He allegedly threw her out of a boat and tried to drown her.
"I'm hoping this new incident will reinvigorate the case and that it will cause someone to come forward that previously has not," Keele said.
In the past, Tyler Mook's family members, including his brother, have all defended him. That all changed recently.
His brother told police in Florida he was there when Tyler Mook attacked his girlfriend. He even filled out a police report.
Tyler Mook now faces attempted murder charges after allegedly attempting to drown his girlfriend.
"I just don't think any woman would be safe around him for any length of time," Keele said.
Shelley Mook's case remains unsolved.
"It's been almost four years," Keele said. "Shelley's mother deserves closure. Shelley's daughter deserves closure. They need to know what happened to their daughter, to their mother, and now would be the time for someone to come forward, even if it's anonymously, and pass that information along."
Shelley Mook's mother, Debra Sikora, released the following statement after Tyler Mook was charged.
"I want the hurt to stop for those that have and are still affected by the acts of one person. Strength be to those who will stand and have their voices heard. It is by those voices that justice will come. By those voices, healing can begin, closure can be sought and faith in others can be restored."

Tyler Mook Facing Attempted Murder Charges in Florida Assault

Tyler Mook, the only person ever names as a person of interest in the disappearance of his estranged wife, Edinboro native Shelley Jones Mook, is now charged with attempted first degree murder for allegedly trying to drown his most recent girlfriend in Florida.

We first told you about the case last month, when it was reported as a crime of domestic battery, but now authorities have filed more serious charges of attempted murder.

The police affidavit indicates that while boating in Palm City, Florida, Tyler Mook became angered after his girlfriend told him to slow the boat down in a no wake area.  Police say he then threw 28-year-old Robin Donech overboard, jumped in and tried to hold her underwater.

Tyler's brother Andrew Mook and his girlfriend were also on board, witnessed the incident, and came to the woman's aid.  They gave statements to police about what happened.

Mook has never been charged in the disappearance of his former wife, Edinboro native Shelley Mook.  She was a teacher in Shelbyville, TN when she disappeared.  Her burned out car was found abandoned, but her body was never found.

Tyler Mook charged with attempted first degree murder of Florida girlfriend

    NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A person of interest in the case of a missing Tennessee teacher has now been charged with attempted first-degree murder in a separate case.
Tyler Mook is the ex-husband of missing Bedford County woman Shelley Mook. Tyler Mook has been charged with attempted first degree murder for a case involving a girlfriend in Florida.
"Mook is a person of interest in a missing woman case from Tennessee, and we're glad to help the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation," said Sheriff William D. Snyder of the Martin County Sheriff's Department in Florida. "We're being very sensitive to their needs, providing any information they need."
Shelley Mook went missing in 2011. Her burned car was later found in Murfreesboro. Tyler Mook made several appearances in court trying to get custody of the couple's daughter.
"The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's case is entirely separate from ours," Snyder said. "Ours is a standalone attempted murder charge."
In October, police said Tyler Mook got into an argument with his girlfriend, threw her off a boat into the water and attempted to hold her under.
"There was a struggle," Snyder said. "She was able to get loose from him. He got ahold of her again, held her back underwater in what was clearly an attempt to kill her."
Police said Tyler Mook's brother, Andrew Mook, was able to put him in a chokehold long enough for the woman to escape. Another witness on the boat claimed to have heard Tyler Mook say, "No one disrespects me in front of my family. I will kill her."
"We have a case here where every bit of evidence says that Mook attempted to kill his girlfriend and that she had to be saved from that," Snyder said.
Snyder added the case slowed when they lost contact with Andrew Mook, but a sworn statement Andrew Mook just gave upgraded the original domestic battery charges on Tyler Mook to attempted first-degree murder.
While he does not represent Tyler Mook in Florida, Tyler Mook's Tennessee attorney David Raybin said, "I am not aware of any reason an alleged domestic dispute should have been elevated to a felony. Mr. Mook has asserted his innocence of this, and I stand behind him."
The Mooks' daughter is in the custody of Shelley Mooks' mother, Debra Sikora. Sikora told a judge in a visitation hearing that Tyler Mook used the little girl to threaten her.
In regards to Tyler Mook's attempted first-degree murder charge, Sikora released this statement:
"I want the hurt to stop for those that have and are still affected by the acts of one person. Strength be to those who will stand and have their voices heard. It is by those voices that justice will come. By those voices, healing can begin, closure can be sought and faith in others can be restored."
Tyler Mook is now in the Martin County jail on a $100,000 bond.

BREAKING: Tyler Mook arrested for attempted murder

BREAKING: Tyler Mook, husband of missing Bedford County teacher Shelly Mook, was arrested in Florida after he allegedly tried to kill his girlfriend by pushing her off a boat and trying to drown her.  Shelley Mook's car was found burned in Rutherford County in February 2011. The case is still open, but another is closing in on Mook's former husband and suspect of interest. According to the affidavit, Tyler Mook was first arrested for domestic assault, then upgraded to attempted first degree murder. Mook was boating near Sandsprit Park with his brother, Andrew Mook and their girlfriends. An argument  occurred after Mook's girlfriend told him to slow the boat down. Tyler tried to rip off his girlfriend's bikini top, threw her into the water and then followed her in. At that point, he tried to hold her head under the water to drown her but she was able to fight her way free.  Andrew Mook said he jumped into the water and had to put his brother in a choke hold in order to keep Tyler from the girlfriend, who he has been in a relationship with since 2012. A passing boat picked up the victim. Martin County Sheriff, William Snyder says the case is not linked to Shelley Mook's but his office is working with Tennessee Investigators like Bedford County District Attorney, Robert Carter.  Robert Carter says, "The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is working with the folks in Florida. Primarily if they need someone here in Tennessee, or they need witnesses we are happy to find them. It's those types of things that we are able to provide and that's what we're doing." Carter says it gives hope, but they are dealing with the facts and evidence they have right now. Carter says, "It's never a good idea to jump to conclusions and make assumptions about any case, in the Florida case, Tennessee case or any other case. But we will see and its opportunity and we will take advantage of it." Tyler Mook is being held on $100,000 bond. Shelley Mook's mother released this statement to Fox 17 tonight regarding her reaction to Tyler Mook's arrest: "I want the hurt to stop for those that have, and are still effected by the acts of one person.  Strength be to those who will stand and have their voices  heard.. It is by those voices that justice will come. By those voices healing can begin.. closure can be sought.. and faith in others can be restored" - Debra Sikora ALSO READ A PREVIOUS REPORT BELOW:  NASHVILLE, Tenn. - New leads are giving new hope to the family of a missing Bedford County woman. Shelley Mook disappeared nearly three years ago, and TBI investigators are now examining new evidence. The TBI is searching a van owned by the neighbor of Shelley's husband, Tyler Mook. Investigators say Tyler is a person of interest in the case. The search for Shelley Mook has taken years. People have been looking for the former teacher ever since her car was found burned in February 2011. There is now a new lead. "Anything that they find that may be of some evidentiary value, that is what we're looking for," says TBI Executive Officer Illana Tate.     The TBI won't say what led them to the neighbor's van, or how it might be connected.   It is good news to Shelley's mother Debbie Sikora, who lives with Shelley's nine year old daughter Lily in Pennsylvania. "It is very important for me as a mother, and for Lily as my daughter's daughter, to know where she is," says Debbie Sikora. Shelley Mook's case is important to many in Bedford County. There have been vigils and walks to make the public aware of this and other missing person cases. Jesse Julien has helped organize those events.  "I'm hoping that this is going to be one of the breaking leads, and hopefully serve justice to someone," says Jesse Julien. TBI investigators confirm this case is open and active. "We want to leave every stone turned over to see what we can find, and this is just one of those things," says Illana Tate. Shelley Mook's mother hopes one day she'll know what happened to her daughter, and she believes this new lead offers a chance for justice. "And hopefully all of this will tie together and finally will bring this to a resolution," says Sikora. It may take several days for investigators to finish processing the van. Investigators tell us Tyler Mook has moved out of Tennessee and is now living in Florida.

Tyler Mook arrested for attempted murder of girlfriend Robin Donech in Martin County

The ex-husband of a high profile missing woman in Tennessee has been arrested in Martin County for trying to kill his new girlfriend.
Martin County Sheriff's Office Detectives have arrested Tyler Mook.
Investigators say that on October 4, 2014, Mook tried to kill his girlfriend at the time by pushing her off of a boat and holding her underwater in an attempt to drown her.
Mook was originally arrested on domestic battery charges, but those charges are now upgraded to attempted first degree murder.
Mook's ex-girlfriend, Robin Donech, flagged down a police officer at Sandsprit Park on October 4 and stated her boyfriend tried to kill her.  Donech claims that she and Tyler Mook, along with his brother Andrew Mook and his girlfriend had left a boat dock on a boat headed to "the sand bar."
At one point when the boat was driving fast through a "no wake zone", Donech told Tyler to slow down.
She says an argument ensued where Tyler Mook attempted to rip off her bathing suit top and then threw her in the water. Donech says Tyler immediately followed her into the water and attempted to hold her under the surface of the water. She says she was able to fight her way back to the surface and Tyler immediately pushed her under again.
Donech says Tyler's brother Andrew Mook jumped into the water and was able to get her free from Tyler and after that, Tyler swam back to the boat.  Donech says she and Andrew Mook flagged down a passing boat which took her back to the boat ramp.
Donech claims that she believes Tyler was trying to drown her and is certain that she would have drowned if Andrew Mook had not helped her.
Andrew Mook's girlfriend, Nicole Gvajardo, told investigators that when Tyler swam back to the boat, he stated, "No one disrespects me in front of my family. I will kill her."
Andrew Mook told investigators that once he observed Tyler attempt to hold Donech underwater two or three times, he grabbed a water "noodle" and jumped in after her.  Andrew said he had to place his brother Tyler in a "choke hold" to get him to release Donech.
Once Donech was picked up by a passing boat, Andrew Mook says he, his girlfriend and his brother Tyler returned to Sandsprit Park where Tyler loaded the boat onto the trailer and left.
Andrew and his girlfriend waited at the park for Donech to return to the boat dock.
According to an affidavit, Robin Donech and Tyler Mook were involved in a romantic relationship since March 2012.
Mook is being held on $100,000 bond for the attempted murder case in Martin County.
He has also been the main person of interest in the 2011 disappearance of his ex-wife Shelley Mook in Tennessee.
According to published reports, Tennessee authorities found her charred vehicle shortly after her disappearance, but her body has never been found. No arrests have been made in that case.

Tyler Mook accused of assaulting girlfriend in FL

    http://www.wsmv.com/story/27453907/tyler-mook-accused-of-assaulting-girlfriend-in-fl

    NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's only person of interest in the disappearance of Shelley Mook has been arrested on separate charges.
Tyler Mook is listed as the main person of interest in his wife's disappearance and possible murder. Now, he's accused of attacking a different young mother.
Shelley Mook, a Bedford County teacher, is still missing. Her case remains unsolved.
Meanwhile, Tyler Mook has been living in Florida with his new girlfriend. Prosecutor Kevin Keele said the woman bears a striking resemblance to Tyler Mook's estranged wife.
"They are both similar in size and stature, both have blonde hair, similar appearance, both have blonde daughters for children," Keele said. "The resemblance is uncanny."
Tyler Mook is behind bars after allegedly trying to drown his new girlfriend.
According to an affidavit, they were on a boat with Tyler Mook's brother and another woman.
Tyler Mook's girlfriend told him to slow down. Investigators said he then ripped off her bathing suit top, threw her overboard and jumped in and held her underwater.
Keele said Tyler's Mook's brother then came to the rescue.
"Had Tyler's brother, Andrew, not been there to pull Tyler off of her, he would have most likely succeeded," Keele said.
The brother and the other woman gave statements to police corroborating everything. They said after trying to drown his girlfriend, Tyler Mook said, "No one disrespects me in front of my family. I will kill her."
"I think he would be a danger to any woman that would have become involved with him," Keele said.
Keele said Tyler Mook has no regard for the law.
"I have met very few individuals like Tyler Mook that had absolutely no conscious and an immediate propensity for violence," he said.
Keele said the woman is lucky to be alive.
"There's no doubt in my mind that he would have killed her had Andrew not been there to physically choke him off of her," he said.
"It's a shame Shelley Mook didn't have someone like Andrew there when she needed help," Keele added.
The victim in this case now has an order of protection against Tyler Mook. He has not bonded out of jail in Florida.
Tyler Mook's Tennessee attorney, David Raybin, said he's being represented by a public defender in Florida and does plan to contest these latest assault and battery charges.

The man suspected in her disappearance wants custody of their child.

Shelley Jones-Mook, who was 24-years old at the time, disappeared in Tennessee, back in February of 2011.

She was last seen with her ex-husband.

Police tracked down her burned-out car, but never found her body.

Her ex-husband, Tyler Mook, is the main person of interest in her disappearance.

But, nobody has been charged in her presumed murder.

We've learned that her ex-husband is still fighting for custody of their 10-year old daughter, who now lives in Edinboro with her grandmother.

Tyler Mook lost a custody fight in Tennessee, so after appealing, now a judge here in Pennsylvania will determine if he gets custody.

Shelly's mother released a statement to WICU & WSEE, it reads,
"I am very confident that any judge will have the knowledge and facts to make the best decision for my granddaughter. She has flourished here in Pennsylvania and my hopes will be that she continues to. She has been surrounded with love and family, which has allowed her to grow and find happiness after the tragedy of her mother missing. We continue to seek justice for Shelley and will hold those responsible for her disappearance to the highest extent of the law when they are found out. I pray that Shelley's beautiful daughter, my amazing granddaughter, will soon have peace with a final resting place for her mother."

TBI confirms new leads on missing Bedford County teacher

    SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. -
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed they have seized new evidence in the Shelley Mook case.
Shelley Mook, 24, disappeared nearly three years ago.
Mook was a beloved 8th grade teacher at Harris Middle School in Shelbyville. On February 28, 2011, investigators said she went to her ex-husband's home to drop off their 6-year-old daughter. Later that night her car was found in a field, just outside of Murfreesboro. Police said it had been set on fire.
Mook was never found and investigators suspect foul play.
Her ex-husband, Tyler Mook, is believed to be the last person to have seen her alive. The TBI searched his home but he was never arrested. He's still considered a person of interest.
On December 27, 2013, investigators with the TBI seized the van of Tyler's neighbor. They have confirmed they're processing it for any possible evidence. The circumstances which led to the seizure is not being released.
Over the years, many searches and vigils have been organized by family and friends.
The last one was in the fall of 2012 when the TBI received new leads and searched for her in a rural area near a set of railroad tracks in Franklin County.
Shelley's mom, who lives in Pennsylvania, now has custody of Shelley's daughter.
A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Shelley's whereabouts.
Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-TBI-FIND.

A newly-posted billboard across the street from Shelbyville and Bedford County law enforcement headquarters is helping give hope to family members of five missing persons.
"We're looking for a killer," Sherry Meeks, brother of Leon McClaran Sr., who died with his wife Mollie in a September 2012 house fire near Rover, said Thursday. The bodies of Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel, who were staying with their grandparents, have not been found.

"In our opinion they were murdered. That's how we feel," she said, standing with sisters Mary Lamb and Karen Smith.
Relatives of Chloie and Gage, Bobby Smelcer, whose skull was found in Duck River in April 2012 after he was reported missing in November 2010, and Antonio Taylor, last seen in 1999, gathered under the Lane Parkway billboard Thursday afternoon.
They shared hugs and hope at what Kristy Smelcer, Bobby's sister, termed a "visual" event. The billboard also includes Shelley Mook, a Shelbyville teacher last seen in February 2011.
No Mook family members were present, but Smelcer said she'd heard Tyler Mook was attempting to gain custody of his and Shelley's daughter at a hearing Thursday in Pennsylvania, where the girl has been staying with a grandparent.
A van belonging to a neighbor of the Mooks on Nashville Dirt Road was being processed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's crime lab earlier this week, said a TBI spokesperson who did not release further details.
The families admit it's hard to not know the fate of their loved ones for so long -- but hope remains.
"Pray to God," Rochelle Adams, Taylor's mother, says when asked how she copes. "We just hope and pray that one day there will be some kind of closure."
Kristy Smelcer, an organizer of many of the events highlighting searches for the Bedford County missing, says "hope" gives her strength.
"The hope that we're going to get there -- find the rest of him and find out what happened, get resolution for my family," Smelcer said. "It's so different from death."
She's learned ways to cope since Bobby's disappearance in November 2011.
"At first it got the best of me," Smelcer said. "Now I've learned to balance it out. One thing that keeps me going is all the others that have gone missing."

Dog handlers from Bloodhound Search & Rescue of Clarksville attended the event. They say they've been working with area law enforcement in all the cases.
"We've worked all cases, even Antonio Taylor," dog handler Theresa Compton said. "We became involved in Bedford County right after Bobby went missing."
The group took part in 132 searches -- from missing persons to wanted criminals -- in the Middle Tennessee area last year, dog handler Lois Alexander said.
Those included at least seven in Bedford County including "three to four" searches for Smelcer, she said.
"In any search, clearing areas is as good as having an actual find as you close out the area," Alexander said. "You know they're not there."
Emotions felt by families of the missing are shared by searchers, Alexander said.
"The closure you bring the family is not one you can describe. It's euphoric," she said as she stroked Stozie, a Dutch shepherd.

Billboards, searches and special events are supported by the families to keep the missing in the mind of the public, they say.
"There are leads coming in," Smelcer said. "Every time we do a visual like this we get leads coming in.
"It keeps cases from becoming cold."
The billboard is funded by the Kristen Foundation for the Missing of Charlotte, N.C., which Smelcer says helps families of the missing across the country.
"Joan Scanlon-Petrouski (leader of the foundation) has never charged us a dime," Smelcer said. "Lamar Advertising gave us a huge discount on the billboard."
The Kristen Foundation is named for Kristen Modaffari, a Charlotte resident who disappeared while living and studying in San Francisco. Scanlon-Petrouski was a neighbor of Modaffari's parents. See kristenfoundation.org for more details.
"We are confident the dedicated efforts of each and every one of these victims' families, combined with the diligent efforts of state and local law enforcement, will produce the leads we so desperately need," Det. Sgt. Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said in a press release.
"We also ask the citizens of Bedford County to keep each of these victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers throughout the year."

New lead in Shelley Mook disappearance provides hope

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
