PALM CITY, Fla. -- The former husband of an Edinboro native who disappeared in 2011 in Tennessee was convicted Thursday of attempting to kill another woman by drowning her, according to the TCPalm newspaper.

Tyler Mook, 35, of Palm City, was convicted Thursday of attempted second-degree murder from an Oct. 4, 2014, incident in which authorities accused him of throwing his girlfriend over the front of a boat and holding her underwater, the paper reported.

Mook's brother was on the boat and managed to pull him off, allowing the woman to escape, the paper reported.

Tyler Mook is a person of interest in the 2011 disappearance of Edinboro native Shelley Mook.

An eighth-grade reading teacher in Shelbyville, Tenn, Shelley Mook was last seen on Feb. 28, 2011, by her estranged husband after she dropped off their then 6-year-old daughter at his home in Shelbyville during the afternoon.

Later that day, her burned-out car was found on a highway, about 18 miles away, in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Authorities in Tennessee conducted several searches for evidence in the Shelbyville area, but never found Shelley Mook's body.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation named Tyler Mook their main person of interest, but never made an arrest.

The case remains unsolved.

It has been five years since Shelley Mook has been seen by anyone. At the time of her disappearance, authorities were looking at her estranged husband Tyler Mook.

That case still remains unsolved. But now, Tyler Mook has been found guilty of trying to kill a different woman.

"Hopefully he wont be able to hurt anyone else," said Kevin Keele a private investigator.

Tyler Mook is now convicted of attempted murder in the first degree.

"I think Tyler would be a threat to any woman he happened to be with," Keele said.

According to police in Florida, Tyler Mook threw his girlfriend Robin Donneth off of a boat and attempted to hold her under water. Tyler's brother Andrew Mook managed to pull him off. A witness claimed Tyler then said, "No one disrespects me in front of my family. I will kill her."

"Its good that Tyler's brother Andrew was there when this happened with Ms. Donneth. It's just a shame that someone wasn't here for Shelley when she needed it most and able to protect her," Keele said.

Shelley Mook, a Bedford County teacher, vanished in 2011. While the TBI named Tyler their main person of interest, they never made an arrest.

"The longer it goes, the harder it is to get a conviction or maybe even to prosecute anyone for the murder of Shelley Mook," said Jonathan Brown, Shelley Mook's mother's attorney.

Tyler Mook's Tennessee attorney David Raybin told Channel 4:

I spoke with Tyler's Florida attorney this morning whom I've been in constant communication with. He is going to appeal the verdict to higher courts down there. I can say that that incident down there is of no relevance whatsoever to the allegations here. I am certainly aware that nothing about the Tennessee case came into the Florida trial in any way. Tyler absolutely maintains his innocence regarding the disappearance of his former wife Shelley Mook.

As for Shelley Mook's family, Thursday's conviction wasn't the justice they've been waiting for, but they do consider it a small victory.

"Hopefully this will promote people to maybe come forward with information they didn't want to come out with because maybe they were scared of Tyler Mook or something like that," Brown said.

Shelley Mook's mother was in court Thursday to witness Tyler's conviction. A family friend, Brittany Brooks sent the following statement:

Today we feel like we could lift the weight of the world! Now is the time for anyone with information on Shelley to come forward. Be strong. Don't have fear. Help us get justice for her.

Tyler Mook's sentencing hearing will take place in May.

Palm City man convicted of attempted murder in attack on girlfriend

MARTIN COUNTY — A jury has convicted a Palm City man of attempting to murder his girlfriend by drowning her, said Assistant State Attorney Nita Denton.

Tyler Mook, 35, of the 1000 block of Southwest All American Boulevard, was convicted Thursday of attempted second-degree murder stemming from an Oct. 4, 2014, incident. Mook was in a boat with his girlfriend, his brother and his brother's girlfriend, heading for the Stuart Sandbar, according to Denton and an arrest report.

An argument led to Mook throwing his girlfriend over the front of the boat and holding her down underwater near Sandsprit Park, according to Sheriff William Snyder.

He was arrested Dec. 13, 2014, on a warrant.

Mook's sentencing is scheduled for May 26, Denton said. His trial began Monday, and the jury began deliberations Wednesday.

In an unrelated case, Mook is a person of interest in the 2011 disappearance of his former wife, Shelley Mook. He is believed to have been the last person to see the Tennessee woman before she disappeared.

Mook suspected in death, attempted murder

MARTIN COUNTY, Fl.

The man who is a person of interest in the presumed death of his Edinboro wife is now on trial in Florida for the attempted murder of his girlfriend. 

Jury selection is underway in the case against Tyler Mook. He is being tried in a Martin County, Florida courtroom for attempting to drown his girlfriend while on a boat in 2014.

He is also a person of interest in the case of his missing wife, Shelley Mook.

Action News has followed the case over the years.

The school teacher from Edinboro disappeared in 2011 while the two were living in Tennessee.

The burned out remains of her car were found a few days after she disappeared.

Shelley Mook is now presumed dead.
